A Remedy in Red Rice Yeast?
Tuesday, September 04, 2007
I am fearful of getting Alzheimer's. My grandfather got it when he was around 70. He was a doctor, and when he quit working he had
a steady downfall with his memory. I forget things and repeat
stories to friends who tell me I already told them the story.
I would love to prevent or
delay this illness if I can, and I've heard that red rice yeast can help. What is it, and where can I get it? If I am already on medication for high cholesterol, can I take it in addition to my medication?

Supplements for your brain
Red Rice yeast is a natural statin. Whether you should take this in addition to other colesterol lowering drugs is a question for your doctor. There are other supplements which are good for brain health and may reduce your risk of Alzheimer's. Chief among these would be omega-3. A lack of omega-3 has been shown to diminish intellectural performance and is linked with dementia. You probably don't get enough from just eating fish, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and flax seeds. You need about 1000 mg a day. Other useful supplements would include alpha lapoic acid and acetyl-L-carnitine. Eating lots of fresh fruits and vegetables is also important as is drinking lots of water. Eggs are very good because they are rich in choline which has been shown to enhance memory. Green tea is also good for the brain as it slows the build up of plaque from amyloid deposits.
